The Monett Cubs track team is experiencing a youth movement this season. On the girls team, 18 of the 21 members are sophomores or freshman. On the boys track team, 20 of the 31 participants are sophomores or freshman.
Of the 52 total track athletes, only three are seniors.
"We are excited to see what the 2012 season has in store," said track coach Chad Depeť. "Our numbers are up this year and we look forward to the opportunity to compete. We have some experienced runners returning in our distance events and we feel we can be very competitive.
"We also have hopes that our young up-and-comers in our mid-distance races continue to improve as they already have and we look for them to be in the mix this year," continued Depeť. "Some new additions to our sprinters along with our returners will hopefully make us an extremely competitive group not only in individual sprints, but also in our relays. We are very thin with our throwers. We only have one returner. We also look forward to seeing our jumpers this year. Along with our returners, we feel that some new additions to the team have a chance to be very successful."
For the Lady Cubs, they are coming together quickly.
"We have been working hard during the first couple of weeks of practice," said coach Kelly George. "I think our strength could be our field events and middle to long distance."
