Destructive blaze

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Firefighters from five area fire departments were called to the scene of an early morning fire at a residence located on Highway 37 about a mile north of the Monett city limits. Monett Rural Fire Chief Larry Eden said the Monett Fire Department, the Monett Rural Fire Department, the Pierce City Fire Department, the Pierce City Rural Fire Department and the Freistatt Fire Department were all called to the scene. Firefighters received the initial call at 1:40 a.m. and remained on scene fighting the blaze for about five hours. The homeowner, Gary Rook, was away on business and not home when the fire began. No one was injured. Eden said it appeared that the fire originated upstairs and flames were already through the roof when firefighters arrived on scene. "We got it contained and then the cold front came through," said Eden. "The winds picked up to 35 or 40 miles per hour, and we could not get the fire under control again." The home was completely destroyed in the blaze. Eden said the fire appeared to be accidental in nature. [Times Photo by Lisa Schlichtman]
