The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging is seeking candidates for its Silver Haired Legislature (SHL). Nominated individuals must be 60 years of age or older.
SHL delegates participate in a model legislative session in Jefferson City each fall. During the session, delegates debate and vote on five priority proposals or concepts for presentation to the Missouri General Assembly.
Area Agencies on Aging send 120 representatives and 30 senators to the model legislative session. All delegates serve voluntarily, without pay.
Local nominations are needed for a seat in the West Senatorial District, which serves Barry, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Lawrence, Polk and Stone counties. The elected candidate will fill a two-year term.
A house seat will also be filled in District #4, which serves Barry, Lawrence and Stone counties. This is also a two-year term.
Individuals interested in serving in the SHL should pick up a Declaration of Candidacy form at the Monett Senior Center, which is located at 405 Dairy St. Forms must be returned by April 2.
Elections will be conducted on Tuesday, May 8. Individuals who are 60 years or older will be invited to cast their votes at their local senior center during regular hours. The Cassville Senior Center is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
