The Pierce City Lady Eagles' season came to an end Thursday in the Class 3, District 12 semi-final with a 46-45 loss to top-seeded host Mt. Vernon.

Freshman MacKenzie Farmer's free throw with 2.3 seconds propelled the Lady Mountaineers into their third consecutive district championship game.

The Lady Eagles started the game red hot and led 20-7 after one quarter of play. Mt. Vernon rallied in the second period, outscoring the Lady Eagles 15-6 to trail 26-22 at halftime.

The Lady Mountaineers carried their momentum into the third quarter outperforming the Lady Eagles 15 to 8 to lead 37-34 to start the fourth quarter.

With the game tied 45-45 and a few precious seconds remaining on the clock, a loose-ball foul was called on the Lady Eagles. Farmer stepped to the line and missed the first offering at the charity stripe. After a timeout, Farmer's second attempt rattled home. A last second shot by the Lady Eagles was not good as Mt. Vernon prevailed.

Scoring for Mt. Vernon were: Amelia Bramer, 17; Danielle Goodman, 15; Tamiaya Henderson, 8; and Farmer, 6.

Scoring for Pierce City: Kaelyn Osborn, 14; Krishna Merriman, 10; Bailee Hayward, 8; Megan Golubski, 6; Christine Younker, 4; and Becca Hatfield, 3.
