Affectionately known as Willie, she will be remembered for her love of family, friends and commitment to God. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. Willie actively served as a volunteer with Loaves and Fishes, Cox Monett Auxiliary and Collective Arts. Willie enjoyed reading, playing golf, card games,and traveling. Her yard was always filled with beautiful flowers, a lifetime hobby shared with her husband, Ray.
Willie was born in Arma, Kan., on March 30, 1916, to John L. Young and Jane Finley Young and grew up in Pittsburg, Kan. A graduate of Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1937, she later taught Home Economics at Monett High School for 25 years.
She married Raymond Worth Shanks in April of 1938, and they spent most of their married lives in Monett where they raised their four children. She is survived by Larry Shanks and wife, Carleen, of Monett; Jane Forster and husband, Bob, of Sedalia, Colo.; Marilyn Wood and husband, Steve, of Hays, Kan. and Joyce Jackson and husband, Noel, of Texarkana, Texas.
Husband Raymond preceded her in death on March 15, 1990. Four brothers and an infant sister also preceded her in death: Jane, John, George, Ed and Jim. She is survived by one sister, Norma Washburn, of Monett; her four children; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shanks will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Monett on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Reverend Paul Lanning officiating. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Monett. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Loaves and Fishes or Hospice Compassus in care of the funeral home.
