Event to honor chamber leader

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Outgoing Chamber Executive Director Suzy McElmurry will be honored during an open house next Tuesday, March 6 at the Monett Chamber of Commerce office.

The special event will be hosted by the Monett Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and members of the community are invited to drop by the office between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to congratulate McElmurry on her retirement.

"Suzy has not only served the chamber for the past 12 years, but she has been a volunteer in the community as well," said Regina Bowsher, chamber president. "Personally, that is how I first met her -- when we worked on the bond issue together to build the new Southwest Area Career Center.

"So on behalf of the board of directors, I invite not just our chamber members, but others in the community who know Suzy, to stop by the chamber office on Tuesday and wish her well on her retirement," added Bowsher.

McElmurry made the decision to retire at the start of the year and submitted her letter of resignation to the chamber board on Jan. 18.

Under McElmurry's tenure, the chamber moved into a new building at 200 E. Broadway and several successful programs were launched, including the Festival of Lights holiday lighting display and the Leadership Monett program.

McElmurry and her husband, Coe, plan to remain in the Monett area. Looking for new adventures will be a focus for McElmurry in her retirement.

"I feel like I've had tremendous support," said McElmurry when she announced her plans to retire from her chamber post. "I couldn't have accomplished anything without the membership support and the community support. It's been awesome."

The open house will be a come-and-go event, and all community members are encouraged to attend.
