New goal in place

A high school regulation-sized basketball court with two goals has been installed at Monett's North Park. The addition was the idea of Parks Superintendent Russ Balmas, who wanted to provide an outdoor experience with comparable size challenges to league games. The only other basketball court in the parks is a single goal at South Park. The $17,000 project received a $10,000 grant from the Monett Community Foundation, with labor and materials provided by the city. The distinctive purple and gold colors, matching Monett High School, comes from a series of thick plastic tiles. Balmas said the color is imbedded in the plastic and will not fade. The VersaCourt company, of Lamar, manufactured the court. Sod will be laid around the perimeter, so the public can use it in the near future. "This is just something else for people to get out and do," Balmas said. [Times Photo by Murray Bishoff] [Order this photo]
