Pierce City opened Class 3 District 12 play on Saturday at Mt. Vernon with a 76-56 victory over Sarcoxie. A strong 29-point performance by Wayne Joe Sooter helped the Eagles overcome a 16-15 deficit at the end of the first quarter and led to the 20-point victory.

"Our boys came out and did a great job on both ends of the floor," said Pierce City coach Matt Street. "It was a great win for us and now we turn out attention to Mt. Vernon."

Pierce City outscored the Bears 19-11 in the second quarter and poured on an 18-7 third quarter while building an insurmountable lead. Four Eagles wound up scoring in double figures.

Pierce City scorers: Sooter, 29; Zach Hyde, 15; Cody Fitchpatrick, 14; Kole Kelley, 13; and Colin Garner, 5.

Sarcoxie scorers: Jesse Jones, 16; Austin Lynch, 12; Justin Meyers, 7; Jordan Clayton and Garrett Triplett, 5 each; Kurt Bloss and Ryan Korff, 4 apiece; Kelta Resa, 3.

After winning Saturday's play-in game over Sarcoxie, the Eagles advance to play top-seeded Mt. Vernon at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That contest will be followed by three more games: Seneca meets Clever at 6 p.m., Southwest plays Ash Grove at 7:30 p.m., and Diamond takes on East Newton at 9 p.m.
