On Jan. 11, St. Lawrence Catholic School in Monett received a certificate of appreciation for their participation in the asthma education program. The presentation was made by Brenda Barger-Saunders, Cox Monett's asthma educator.
So far this school year, Monett, Verona, Exeter, St. Lawrence Catholic (Monett), Pierce City, Aurora and Trinity Lutheran (Freistatt) schools have completed the program that works with fourth through sixth grade students.
The program is funded by the Missouri Foundation for Health. Through the grant, Cox Monett provides education, supplies, medication assistance, home assessments, access to a pediatric pulmonologist and much more, free of charge.
The purpose of the program is to identify children with asthma, provide asthma education to these children and their families, improve asthma management at school and home and provide materials and assistance as needed.
Screening questionnaires are utilized to pinpoint those students who can benefit from the asthma education program. To date, over 1,300 students in the two-county area have received a questionnaire and over 800 students have attended a general respiratory and good lung health presentation. More than 60 children have completed or are currently enrolled in asthma education classes.
