MHS speech and debate team competes at Nevada tournament

The Monett High School speech and debate team competed at the Nevada Speech and Debate tournament on Jan. 6 and 7.

The following students advanced to the semi-finals: Tania Contreras, oratory; Tarek Masri, radio and U.S. extemporaneous; Laramie Ellis, poetry; Kara Hopkins, prose; Garrett Maxey and Emily Copening, duo interpretation; Kiersten Harper and Garrett Craig, duo interpretation; Emily Copening, dramatic interpretation; Ryan Saunders, humorous interpretation; and Jonah Ragsdale, U.S. extemporaneous.

The following students advanced to finals and placed: Laramie Ellis, sixth place, prose; Anna Cloud, sixth place, poetry; Andrew Brown, sixth place, storytelling; Tom Younker, fifth place, U.S. extemporaneous and third place, novice Lincoln-Douglas debate; Bryce Isbell, fourth place, U.S. extemporaneous; Jonah Ragsdale, fourth place, oratory; Samuel Martinez, fourth place, prose; Kale Turner, fourth place, radio; Kyler Simkins, fourth place, novice Lincoln Douglas debate; Matt Murphy, fourth place, poetry; Hunter Williams and Haley Henry, fourth place, novice public forum; Garrett Maxey, second place, storytelling; Jarrett Johnson and Kiersten Harper, second place, novice public forum; and Reece Johnson, first place, international extemporaneous.
