The Monett Cubs basketball team took fourth place in their eight-team pod of the NEO Invitational Tournament on Saturday, falling 63-56 to Tulsa (Okla.) McLain.
The Cubs trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and were down 33-18 at halftime.
Monett would rally in the third quarter, opening the second half with a 13-4 run that cut the McLain advantage to 37-31 with a minute to play in the period. McLain stopped the bleeding and led 43-35 to begin play in the fourth quarter.
The Cubs would cut the lead twice to 6 points in the final eight minutes but could get no closer.
Scoring for the Cubs were: Kyle Woods, 17; Tyler Green, 14; Travis Thompson, 8; Jarred Witt, 7; Jacob Fair, 4; and Tyler Webb, Aaron Patton and Dillon Freudenthal, 1 each.
The Monett Cubs couldn't slow a second half rush as Southwest pulled away for a 53-30 victory in the NEO Invitational Tournament Friday night.
The Trojans led 13-8 after one quarter of play and took a 25-20 lead into halftime.
Monett was unable to break Southwest's defensive pressure and only managed 10 second-half points.
Skyler Knoll led Southwest with 25 points.
Scoring for Monett were: Green, 12; Thompson, 4; Woods and Fair, 3 each; Webb and Patton, 2 apiece; and Fruedenthal, 1.
Monett hosts Carl Junction on Tuesday. The game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
