Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly said Kyle Filbeck, 19, of Galena, was captured on Wednesday as a result of a tip through the Barry-Lawrence Chapter of Crime Stoppers and was arrested by Stone County authorities at the home of his grandmother.
Arresting officers took Filbeck into custody, noting that he had been severely beaten. According to Epperly, Filbeck came into the Barry County Jail with two stints in his nose along with stitches and screws in his facial area.
A second suspect, Timothy Plopper, Jr., 22, was also apprehended yesterday by Stone County authorities. He and Filbeck are believed to be responsible for up to approximately 20 car thefts in the bi-county area and torching and abandoning the vehicles. Property damage estimates are still being compiled.
Filbeck is being held at the Barry County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash only bond. Plopper is in custody at the Stone County Jail on unrelated charges. He will be transferred to Barry County at a later date. His bond is $50,000 cash only.
"I'm glad we have these two in custody and are getting the case resolved," Epperly said. "I'm sure their victims will sleep better knowing they are off the streets."
Epperly said investigators are conducting more interviews to determine if any other people were involved with the thefts.
"We appreciate everyone's hard work to get these guys in custody," Epperly said. "Other agencies that assisted were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the state fire marshal's office, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and, of course, my officers here."
Tim Plopper, Sr., was also arrested Wednesday in Stone County on unrelated warrants.
