Citizens who serve as members of local school boards will be honored during the last week of January. From Jan. 22 through Jan. 28, the Missouri School Board Association sponsors Board Recognition Week. Area residents are encouraged to recognize the men and women who serve on local school boards.
"We are very fortunate to have a group of volunteers that care so deeply about our students and community," said John Jungmann, superintendent of the R-1 Monett School District. "The school board members are willing to put forth the time and effort to make our district a great place for our students to learn."
Local school board members are called on to be an important part of the policy-making process for their districts and are often asked to help make decisions about educational programs, facilities and personnel. Their service helps make sure decisions about schools are made as close to the needs of the children and communities as possible.
"As citizens who serve children and represent their community, the school board members of Purdy R-2 School District are to be commended for their dedicated service," said Jerry Lingo, Purdy superintendent. "They are extraordinary people who soluntarily tackle the job of governing the school system, and their actions very much affect the present and future lives of the children they serve."
Board members are public servants elected by local patrons and do not receive compensation for their efforts.
