Outscoring the Miami (Okla.) Wardogs 25-2 in the fourth quarter allowed the Monett Cubs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat Thursday night to open play in the NEO A&M Boys Basketball Tournament.
"It was ugly," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "We got off to a great start in the first quarter, but struggled on both ends of the floor in the second period."
The Cubs jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter of play, but were outscored 19-7 to trail 29-24 at halftime.
The third period witnessed Monett fall into a deeper hole, getting outperformed 20-11 and trailing 49-35 entering the final period.
"In third period, we played better, Miami just hit everything they threw at the rim," said Goetz. "It all came together in the fourth quarter. Our shots fell and we got the defensive stops. I was proud of the way we finished."
Scoring for Monett were: Kyle Woods, 31; Travis Thompson, 9; Tyler Green, 6; Tyler Webb, 4; Jarred Witt and Aaron Patton, 4; and Dillon Freudenthal, 2.
Monett continues play in the NEO tourney today against Southwest. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
