One man is in custody at the Barry County Jail in connection with a series of car thefts that have occurred over recent weeks in the Barry and Lawrence County areas.
Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly said Kyle Filbeck, 19, of Galena, was captured as a result of a tip through the Barry-Lawrence Chapter of Crime Stoppers and was arrested by Stone County authorities at the home of his grandmother.
Arresting officers took Filbeck into custody, noting that he was severely beaten. According to Epperly, Filbeck came into the Barry County Jail with two stints in his nose along with stitches and screws in his facial area.
Filbeck is one of three people suspected of taking part in at least 20 car thefts in the bi-county area and torching and abandoning the vehicles. Property damage estimates are still being compiled.
Filbeck is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.
A warrant has been issued for at least one other suspect involved in the crimes, Timothy Plopper, Jr., 22, who is known to drift around the Butterfield and Purdy areas.
"He can't run forever," Epperly said. "He is eventually going to get caught.
"I'll be glad when we get this case resolved and dealt with in court," Epperly said. "It will be up to the prosecutor on how he wants to handle these cases and how much time each defendant will have serve."
Tim Plopper, Sr. was also arrested in Stone County on unrelated warrants.
