The Monett Cubs freshman team improved to 9-1 on the season with a 29-21 victory over Mt. Vernon last Thursday.

The Mountaineers led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter and 15-11 at halftime. Monett outscored Mt. Vernon 18-6 in the second half to secure the victory.

"Mt Vernon harassed us all night," said Monett coach Blair Powell. "We struggled to get the ball up the court and played from behind for the first half. We were able to mount another comeback in the second half to win."

Scoring for Monett were: Quincy Jackson, 11; Chad Swanson, 10; Zack Hammond, 6; and Kyndal Phillips, 2.

Southwest

Last Monday, the freshman Cubs rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat Southwest 51-41.

"Southwest was a very physical team," said Powell. "They got us down 18 early in the second quarter and we fought back to trail 28-17 at halftime. Our guys stepped up the defensive pressure and were able to run on them in the second half, outscoring them by 21. Conditioning played a major factor in the game. We were able to rotate fresh players and keep our legs under us in the second half."

Scoring for Monett were: Elijah George and Hammond, 14 each; Jackson, 13; Swanson, 5; Phillips. 4; and Kyle McCallister, 1.

The Cubs will be in action Thursday night at Diamond.
