MMS Cubs continue outstanding season

Thursday, January 19, 2012

The Monett Middle School Cubs eighth grade boys basketball team continued its great season with a 38-34 overtime victory against Marionville Tuesday night.

"We came out pretty sluggishly and compounded the problem by getting into foul trouble," said eighth grade coach Matthew Anderson. "The kids responded in the fourth quarter and overtime by hitting some key shots and also going five of seven on free throws in the extra frame. Jonah Paszek and Logan Coones really carried us offensively."

Scoring for Monett were: Paszek, 15; Coones. 9;

Cameron Witt, 7; David Lee, 3; and Blake Moore and Caleb Morris, 2 each.

On Monday, the eighth grade Cubs downed Big 8 Conference rival Seneca with a 42-5 drubbing.

"We came out and got some steals early and jumped out to a nice first quarter lead," said Anderson. "Unfortunately, we started getting a bit lazy later in the first half since the game wasn't close. I challenged them to be sharp in the second half and we came out really well and got a good win."

Scoring for Monett were: Coones, 13; Witt, 10; Lee, 8; Paszek, 7; and Moore, 4.

In the eighth grade "B" game, Monett prevailed 23-8 over Seneca.

"Dexter Ballay had a nice game for us," said Anderson. "He rebounded well and hit some nice shots. Aaron Craft also hit a couple of 3-point shots tonight. Overall, we played a pretty solid game tonight."

Scoring for the Cubs were: Ballay, 8; Craft, 7; Nick Ives, 6; and Jacob Freeman, 2.

Seventh grade

The Monett Cubs seventh grade team fell 35-33 to Cassville last Tuesday.

Monett held a 16-12 halftime advantage and took a 27-25 lead into the fourth quarter before falling to the Wildcats' rally.

"The game was close throughout," said Monett seventh grade coach Derek Franz. "We were unable to hold on to the lead in the end. The game came down to the final seconds. We had two shots before the buzzer to tie the game. We came up short."

Scoring for Monett were: Trevor Swanson, 11; Alex Turner, 8; Kurran Bartkoski and Mason Swearingen, 4 each; and Danny McKinney and Tommy Sangston, 3 apiece.

The Monett seventh grade "B" team earned a 23-13 win over Cassville.

Scoring for Monett were: Zach Burgherr and Blake Poage, 5 each; Nathan Parker and Jason Young, 3 apiece; Luke Channel and Spencer Crossland, 2 each; and Hunter Freeman, Shane Pass and Tommy Sangston, 1 each.

The seventh and eighth grade Cubs travel to Carl Junction on Monday. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
