Monett drops a pair of hardwood battles

The Monett Lady Cubs fell 75-18 to the Ash Grove Lady Pirates Monday night to open play in the Marionville Lady Comet Classic basketball tournament.

The Lady Cubs were taken out of the game early as a result of 12 first quarter turnovers and the sharp shooting of the Ash Grove line-up.

Monett trailed 12-0 keyed by two quick treys by Erin Weinreis and three layups by Katie Skelton before Raigan Ratliff scored to break into the scoring column for the Lady Cubs at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter. Ash Grove buried six 3-pointers in the game.

Monett fell behind 41-13 at halftime.

The Lady Pirates opened the third quarter by scoring 17 straight points and led 62-17 at the start of the fourth quarter.

"Credit Ash Grove," said Monett coach Derrek Uhl. "They shot the lights and took control of the game. This game is now history, and we need to focus on our next battle."

Scoring for Monett were: Brooke Madison and Hunter Glouse, 4 each; Faith Schmidt, Cheryl Barnes, Ratliff and Allie Krueger, 2 apiece; and Jessica Schmidt and Abby Krueger, 1 each.

Scoring for Ash Grove were: Lakin Simmerman, 15; Halee Cashio, 14; Weinreis, 11; Abby Aricho and Katie Skelton, 10 each; Madi Johnson, 7; Jamie Mauss, 6; and Brodie Skelton, 2.

The Lady Cubs continue play in the Marionville tournament Thursday night against Verona. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

Monett boys

The Monett Cubs jumped out to an early lead but couldn't sustain the momentum, falling 70-54 to visiting Nevada in Tuesday night basketball action.

The Cubs led 16-13 at the end of the first period but were outscored 21 to 11 in the second to trail 34-27 at halftime.

The Tigers barely outperformed Monett in the third period, 14-13, and won the fourth quarter scoring 22 points to Monett's 14.

Drew Bryson led Nevada in scoring with 15 points. Joseph Ferry chipped in 11.

Scoring for Monett were: Kyle Woods, 15; Tyler Green, 14; Travis Thompson, 13; Jacob Fair, 5; Tyler Webb, Jarred Witt and Aaron Patton, 2 each; and Dillon Fruedenthal, 1.

The Cubs open play in the Northeastern Oklahoma Basketball Tournament on Thursday against Miami Okla. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
