The Monett Cubs basketball team couldn't maintain a quick start Monday night, falling 51-39 to Marion C. Early in Morrisville.
"I thought we did some good things in the first quarter," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "We let the zone hurt us again in the second quarter and never could sustain a run to have a chance. Marion was very physical and at times I was disappointed with the way we handled it. We have to find a way to play better against a zone."
The Cubs trailed 15-13 at the end of the first period but only managed three points in the second period to trail 26-18 at halftime. Both team played evenly in the second half with the Panthers scoring 24 to Monett's 23 points.
Scoring for Monett were: Kyle Woods, 13; Tyler Green, 9; Travis Thompson and Jacob Fair, 6; Jarred Witt, 3; and Tyler Webb, 2.
Monett won 42-20 in the JV contest.
Scoring for the Cubs were: Sean Rosebaugh, 13; Caleb Blue, 11; Jake Shmidly, Aaron Morley and Tyler Bass, 4 each; and Aaron Patton, Cooper Caldwell and Zack Swearingen, 2 apiece.
Monett travels to Aurora on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
