On Friday, the seventh grade Cubs earned a 42-33 victory over East Newton to claim the Cassville Tournament championship.
The Cubs jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the first quarter and held a 21-18 advantage at halftime. Monett opened up a 10-point advantage in the third period, leading 32-22 to start the fourth.

Eighth grade action
On Friday, the eighth grade Monett Cubs defeated East Newton 34-21 to claim the tournament championship.
"This was a game that I kind of used to evaluate our bench players a bit more since our regular season is coming up," said eighth grade coach Matthew Anderson. "We've got five really solid starters, and after that, I've got to find several guys who will step up and give us some quality minutes off of the bench."
Scoring for the Cubs were: Logan Coones and Jonah Paszek, 9 each; and Cameron Witt and David Lee, 8 apiece.
The eighth grade "A" team Cubs earned a 33-30 victory over Aurora on Monday.
"It was a tight game throughout the contest," said Anderson. "We had three starters in foul trouble, and Caleb Morris and Dexter Ballay really played well in their stints in the game. Logan (Coones) also had a really nice game and shot well from the outside."
Scoring for the Cubs were: Coones, 17; Paszek, 7; and Blake Moore, Witt and Lee, 3 points each.
In the "B" game, Monett fell 42-19.
"We weren't as fortunate with the outcome of the B game," said Anderson. "We gave up a lot of points, but some of these guys haven't played very much and are learning on the fly. That's one of the big reasons that these games are important to play."
Scoring for Monett were: Ballay, 7; Trentin Rickman and Nick Ives, 5 each; and Caleb Morris, 2.
On Tuesday, the eighth grade Cubs' "A" and "B" teams swept a pair of contests from Cassville.
In the "A" game, Monett prevailed 52-17 over the Wildcats.
"Everything that we tried to do worked," said Anderson. "We shot well and defended well. Cameron (Witt) had an excellent game and got a lot of points from working hard, getting rebounds and putting them in."
|Scoring for Monett: Witt, 20; Paszek, 12; David Lee, 10; Coones,||4; and Ballay, Morris and Jacob Freeman, 2 each.|
In the "B" game, Monett prevailed 32-10 over the Cassville.
"We made some progress in the team's second game," said Anderson. "We handled the ball better than we did Monday night against Aurora. Josh Nickle had a lot of steals and drives that he scored on and Jacob (Freeman) rebounded and almost scored at will tonight."
Scoring for the Cubs were: Freeman, 16; Nickle, 12; and Aaron Craft and Ives, 2 apiece.
The seventh and eighth grade Cubs will be in action on Monday at Seneca.
