Local men join Mo. National Guard

Three local men have enlisted with the Missouri National Guard.

Jared Luke Kaler, of Monett, has enlisted to serve with Company D of the recruit sustainment program in Springfield. Through the program, Kaler will learn basic Army skills and values and become more familiar with his role as a soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

"I want to serve my country," said Kaler.

Kaler hopes to take a leadership role at some point during his Guard career. He was recruited by Sgt. First Class Doug Weston. Kaler, a 2011 graduate of Monett High School, will serve with an engineering unit after completing Army basic and advanced individual training.

Zachariah Bryant Fillinger, of Monett, has enlisted to serve with Company D of the recruit sustainment program in Springfield. Fillinger will serve with an engineering unit after completing basic Army and advanced individual training.

"I wanted to try something new, take on a challenge," said Fillinger.

Currently working in the restaurant industry in Monett, Fillinger said a relative who has served the military inspired his decision. He was recruited by Sgt. First Class Doug Weston.

Nicholas Wayne Mercer, of Purdy, has enlisted to serve with Company D of the recruit sustainment program in Springfield. A 2007 graduate of Purdy High School, Mercer attended Crowder College in Neosho, and he is currently employed with the Barry-Lawrence Ambulance District.

"I want to serve my country in the medical field," said Mercer.

Mercer hopes to earn a commission as an officer for the Guard. He was recruited by Sgt. First Class Jeffory Owens, of the Missouri Army National Guard's Springfield recruiting office.
