Monett, Freistatt and Mt. Vernon firemen responded to a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 44 at 5:50 p.m on Friday, Jan. 6.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a westbound Sterling tractor-trailer, driven by Michael J. Braun, 26, of Springfield, blew a tire on the interstate two miles west of Mt. Vernon at 5:43 p.m. The tractor-trailer ran into the median and struck a guardrail, a median cable and a bridge rail before overturning and descending into the Spring River creek bed and catching fire.

Braun received moderate injuries and was taken to St. John's Hospital-Springfield for treatment.

Traffic backed up on the interstate for more than a mile in both directions while firemen worked to douse the blaze.
