Truck crash near Monett exit on Interstate 44 backs up traffic for miles

Monett city and rural firefighters joined Freistatt and Mt. Vernon firemen responding at 5:50 p.m on Friday, Jan. 6,to a vehicle crash on Interstate 44.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol,a westbound Sterling tractor trailer, driven by Michael J. Braun, 26, of Springfield, blew a tire on Interstate 44 two miles west of Mt. Vernon at 5:43 p.m. The tractor trailer ran into the median, struck a guardrail, a median cable and a bridge rail before overturning and descending into the Spring River creek bed and catching fire.

Braun received moderate injuries and was taken to St. John's Hospital-Springfield for treatment.

Traffic backed up on the interstate for more than a mile in both directions while firemen doused the blaze. The tractor trailer was a total loss.
