Darrell was born on Oct. 23, 1940, in Topeka, Kan., to Roma Montgomery Sligar and Elwood Sligar. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1963 with a master's degree in education. After graduation he had a career as a math teacher and high school principal in Valley Falls, Seneca, and Phillipsburg, Kan.
In 1982 Darrell left education to join Jack Henry and Associates as the 19th employee of the company, working on the development of several early products. He left JHA in 1990 to become a partner in Data Trade which was later acquired by JHA. Darrell returned to JHA in 1998 to lead the development of imaging product Silhouette. He retired in 2010.
In 1963 Darrell married Karen Kampmeier, and they had five children. Karen preceded him in death in 1997. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Lori Swearingen and her husband, Bo, in 2010.
In 2000, Darrell married Jane Hager Sligar who survives him.
Darrell was a dedicated husband, father, brother, and grandfather. Some of his most treasured times were family holidays, travel with his wife and friends, scuba diving, hosting annual "brothers' weekends" for his four brothers and "grandparents' weekends" for his 12 grandchildren. For the past several years, he and Jane enjoyed spending every summer weekend houseboating on Table Rock Lake with their extended family and many friends. He was a friend to all he met.
|He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Monett, where he was a former board member. Darrell also formerly served on the Ozark Festival Orchestra Board as well as volunteering with many other civic and philanthropic organizations.|
Darrell was greatly loved by additional survivors, sons: Kevin Sligar, of Monett; Scott Sligar and wife, Amy, of Lenexa, Kan.; Eric Sligar and wife, Natalie, of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter: Leigh Hobson, of Olathe, Kan.; step-daughters: Amy Hager Schoen and husband, Jeff, of Springfield; Lori Hager Daily and husband, Corbin, of Riverside, Calif.; brothers: Dale Sligar and wife, Sharon, of Edmond, Okla.; John Sligar and wife, Yvonne, of Augusta, Ga.; Larry Sligar and wife, Donna, of Ft. Worth, Texas; Rex Sligar and wife, Andi, of Normal, Ill.; and grandchildren: Haleigh Sligar, Drew Sligar, Jessica Hobson, Megan Hobson, Taylor Mareth, Carli Mareth, Lauren Schoen, Grant Schoen, Jack Schoen, Cole Schoen, Kate Daily and Gavin Daily.
|Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Monett. The family will receive friends at the church at 11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the||American Cancer Society.
