PCHS falls to top seed Bentonville

Thursday, December 29, 2011

The Pierce City Lady Eagles fell 53-16 to defending Class 7A Bentonville, Ark., Wednesday night in the Neosho Holiday Tournament.

"Bentonville is one of the best coached team we have played this season," said Pierce City coach Tiffany Dirks. "They couldn't miss in the first quarter and you have to tip your cap to them."

The Lady Tigers scored the game's first five points before a Krishna Merriman free throw cut the lead to 5-1. Bentonville responded with a 22-2 run to open up a 27-3 lead at the conclusion of one quarter of play.

Bentonville played its reserve players the remainder of the contest as the Lady Eagles struggled to get anything going against a smothering zone defense.

Scoring for Pierce City were: Megan Golubski and Bailey Hayward 4 points each; Merriman, 3 points; Kaelyn Osborn and Christine Younker, 2 points apiece; and Becca Hatfield, 1 point.

Pierce City continues in the Neosho Tournament today against Carthage. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Crowder College.
