Pierce City falls to Pea Ridge in SW Holiday Tourney

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

A 20-4 hammering in the third period ended Pierce City's comeback hopes, and the Eagles fell to the Pea Ridge Blackhawks, 70-55, in Tuesday night action at the Southwest Holiday Tournament.

Wayne Joe Sooter poured in a game-high 28 points for Pierce City, but his efforts were offset by Jacob Hall and Dakota Woodward of the Blackhawks. Hall scored 16 of his team-leading 22 points in the pivotal third quarter, and Woodward pumped in six treys in the first half while scoring 22.

Pea Ridge's Cameron Tidwell scored the first three baskets of the game as the Blackhawks jumped out to an early advantage. Woodward hit three treys in a span of 2:30 to help build a 19-6 Blackhawk lead. Pierce City struggled to score and the first period ended with the Eagles in the hole, 23-10.

Pierce City made a serious run in the second quarter. Colin Garner scored 9 including a clutch trey, and Sooter added 8 as the Eagles cut the lead to just 38-31 at halftime. But the Blackhawks opened the third quarter with a 13-0 run behind Hall's scoring spree. Hall buried his fourth trey of the period with just six seconds on the clock, and Pierce City trailed 58-35 at the final break.

It was a doubly frustrating span for Pierce City, because Sooter switched on defense to cover Woodward out on the point, and held the Pea Ridge sharpshooter scoreless in the period.

Sooter scored 16 points in a valiant effort in the final period as the Eagles cut into the lead, but could never get the lead under double digits.

Pierce City scorers: Wayne Joe Sooter, 28; Colin Garner, 13; Zack Hyde, 7; Colton Drollinger, 4; Kole Kelley, 3.
