Martin retires at Empire

David Martin, director of governmental policy for Empire District Electric Company, retired on Nov. 30 following 10 years of service.

Martin joined Empire in September 2001 as manager of governmental affairs. He was named director of governmental affairs in January 2005, and director of governmental policy in August 2011.

Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, Kan., and a master's of cultural studies from Adams State College, Alamosa, Colo.

Prior to employment with Empire, Martin served as director of public affairs at Kansas City Power and Light. He also directed the wind and solar energy programs within the former Kansas Energy Office from 1979 to 1984.

Martin serves on the board at Joplin's George A. Spiva Center for the Arts and is active in the Joplin Trails Coalition.

Empire provides electricity, water and gas service for approximately 211,000 customers in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Empire sells wholesale electricty to the City of Monett and provides retail electricity to customers in Pierce City, Purdy, Freistatt and Verona.
