The Verona Lady Wildcats basketball team defeated Golden City 51-28 on Friday night behind a stellar 26-point performance from Tristan Carrasquillo.

Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm in the first quarter as the Lady Wildcats built a 12-6 advantage. Verona massaged the lead in the second period, outscoring the Lady Eagles 13 to 5 to lead 25-11 at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats came out of the locker room red hot in the third period, scoring 19 points in the quarter with Carrasquillo accounting for 9 points. Both teams played out their benches in the fourth quarter as the Lady Eagles outperformed Verona 11-7.

"We still have a lot of things that we need to improve," said Verona coach Ryan Yates. "We have a ton of room to grow. Our girls did what we needed to do to win tonight and played a very solid second half."

Scoring for Verona were: Carrasquillo, 26 points, including hitting 13 of 15 at the free-throw line; Taylor Pinkly, 11 points; Jessica Youngberg, Amanda Mullen and Shelby Barsotti, 4 points each; and Leann Hesemann, 2 points.

On Thursday night, the Lady Wildcats picked up a 40-33 victory over Miller.

Verona led 10-6 after the first period, but the Lady Cardinals rallied to tie the contest 17-17 at halftime. Miller outscored Verona 9-6 in the third period but a huge 17-7 fourth quarter surge gave the Lady Wildcats the victory.

Scoring for Verona were: Carrasquillo, 15 points; Pinkly, 15 points; Mullen, 5 points; Barsotti, 4 points; Welters, 3 points; and Hesemann, 1 points.

An injured and short-handed Verona Wildcats team fell 54-37 to Golden City on Friday night.

The Wildcats were missing their top two scorers and their top bench player. The starting line-up featured three underclassmen who earned their first career starts.

Verona hung tough through the first 16 minutes of regulation, trailing 19-15 at intermission. An 8-0 Eagle run to open the third period spelled disaster and quashed any hopes of a Wildcat rally. Golden City outscored Verona 21 to 7 in the period to open up a 40-23 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

"Tonight, we had to play with an unusual set of circumstances," said Verona head coach Brad Stewart. "We didn't play good defense, especially in the second half, and we struggled to find offensive consistency. Those things will happen when you are forced to play kids who aren't normally in the starting line-up."

Scoring for Verona were: Nick Washam, 15 points; Dalton Miller, 9 points; Tomas Estrada and Brent Downs, 4 points each; Seth Losack, 3 points; and Ryan Stanley, 2 points.

The Lady Wildcats will be in action against Halfway on Tuesday, Dec. 26 at noon in the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic tournament. The Wildcats open play in the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 6 p.m. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
