A dozen members of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Monett's youth group began a community service project on Saturday. Their goal is to paint over graffiti that has appeared on many public places in Monett. The group is shown above tackling the rear wall of Main Street Feeds, facing the railroad tracks. Youth leader Barry Lenhart said other areas targeted for cleaning up will receive another coat of paint in the spring. Lenhart was proud of his group's initiative and wanted Monettans to know there are good teens prepared to take care of their town. [Times Photo by Murray Bishoff] [Order this photo]
A Monett man has been arrested in connection with at least 15 counts of graffiti vandalism.

Monett Police Chief Tim Schweder reported that Jeremy J. Shank, 32, who lives at 304 Sixth St., has been arrested and charged with 15 counts of vandalism that have occurred in the downtown district of Monett. Locations were centered at various locations on Bond Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street and Broadway.

"Thanks to information provided by some good citizens, we were able to locate Mr. Shank and make the arrest," Schweder said.

Shank and his girlfriend, Rita Vera, were both arrested. Shank has been charged with 15 counts of property and possession of drug paraphernalia. Vera was charged with possession of a controlled substance and also faces an outstanding warrant from Dallas County.

Schweder has asked various home and business owners to report costs or estimates of having graffiti removed from their property to the Monett Police Department.
