On Friday, the Cubs picked up a 50-46 victory over the McDonald County Mustangs.
The Mustangs scored the game's first 13 points before Monett rallied and trailed 15-9 at the end of the first period. The Cubs outscored McDonald County 22 to 9 in the second period to lead 31-24 at halftime.
"I told the team that we were getting good looks in our offense sets. We just couldn't finish around the rim," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "I was proud of how the boys never panicked and were able to build a 7-point halftime lead. We need to do a better job of hitting free throws at the end of the game to put a team away, but we found a way to win."
Scoring for Monett were: Kyle Woods, 21 points; Tyler Green, 16 points; Jarred Witt, 4 points; Tyler Webb, 3 points; and Dillon Fruedenthal, Travis Thompson and Jacob Fair, 2 points apiece.
In the JV game, Monett fell 54-41.
Caleb Blue, Aaron Patton and Sean Rosebaugh scored 11 points apiece for Monett. Cooper Caldwell chipped in 6 points, and Alex Schmitt finished with 2 points.
The Monett Lady Cubs jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Neosho but couldn't sustain the momentum, eventually falling 50-38 to the Lady Wildcats in varsity basketball action Monday night.
"We showed signs of how young a team we really are tonight," said Monett coach Derrek Uhl. "We have to learn to continue to play with intensity for all for quarters. We struggled when Neosho went to its match-up zone. We must become more aggressive."
Monett trailed 13-9 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats grew the lead to 33-19, outscoring the Lady Cubs 12 to 5 in the third period.
Scoring for Monett were: Abby Krueger and Brianna Varner, 8 points each; Allie Krueger, 7 points; Haylee Morris, 5 points; Brooke Madison, 4 points; and Raigan Ratliff and Faith Schmidt, 3 points apiece.
