The Monett Cubs basketball team earned its first win of the 2011-12 season with a solid 69-43 victory over the Central Bulldogs in the consolation game of the Carthage Tournament.
Monett used steady defensive pressure and easy transition baskets to outscore the Bulldogs 18-7 in the first quarter. The Cubs continued the momentum in the second frame and took a 37-19 into halftime.
"I knew this team was capable of this kind of performance," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "Defense fed the offense and we hit our shots. We were the more physical team and need to continue this style of play."
Kyle Woods was the Cubs' leading scorer with 14 points. Jacob Fair added 13 points. Tyler Green tallied 12 points. Tyler Webb finished with 10 points. Caleb Blue, Travis Thompson and Dillon Freudenthal added 4 points each, and Aaron Patton finished with 1 point.
The Cubs will be in action Tuesday night at Stockton. The game is set for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team fell 46-40 to the Carl Junction Lady Bulldogs in the final game of the Carl Junction Classic.
Monett trailed 24-14 at halftime and 31-22 after three quarters.
Breanna Varner led the Lady Cubs in scoring with 12 points. Abby Krueger added 9 points. Jessica Schmidt finished with 8 points. Raigan Ratliff chipped in 7 points. Halee Morris and Faith Schmidt finished with 2 points apiece.
The Lady Cubs face Joplin tonight. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
