MHS hoops fall in tourney openers

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

The Monett Cubs fell 82-75 in the Carthage Tournament Tuesday night.

"Nevada played an up and down running style of offense and defense," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "It was a completely different style from last season. I thought we did a good job of adjusting, considering we were unprepared for that kind of style. I am proud of our effort; we just came up short."

The Tigers jumped out to a 29-21 advantage after the first period of play and led 51-36 at halftime.

Monett trailed by 16 points early in the third period and trimmed the lead to 2 points with less than two minutes to play. The Tigers pulled away late to secure the win.

Kyle Woods paced the Cubs, scoring with 31 points. Tyler Green poured in 20 points. Tyler Webb added 12 points. Travis Thompson chipped in 4 points. Jacob Fair and Jarred Witt tallied 3 points each, and Dillon Freudenthal finished with 1 point.

Monett will face Seneca in the next round of the Carthage Tournament on Friday. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The Monett Lady Cubs fell 49-41 to the Liberal Lady Bulldogs on Monday night in the opening round of the Carl Junction Classic basketball tournament.

Monett trailed 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and 26-17 at halftime.

The Lady Cubs came out after intermission and turned up the defensive intensity. Using the full-court press and a 3-point barrage from Allie and Abby Krueger, Monett outscored Liberal 15-11 in the third period and trailed 37-32 with a quarter left to play.

The Lady Bulldogs proved to be up to the task in the final period and hit clutch free throws to secure the victory.

"I thought we played better in our half-court defense tonight" said Monett coach Derrek Uhl. "We competed with a team that returned four starters from a team that won 20 ball games last season. I am very encouraged from what I saw last night."

Breanna Varner led the Lady Cubs in scoring with 10 points. Faith Schmidt tallied 8 points. Jessica Schmidt and Kelsey Wiseman added 6 points each. Raigan Ratliff recorded 4 points, and Abby Krueger and Allie Krueger finished with 3 points apiece.

Monett continues play in the Carl Junction Classic on Thursday against the Carl Junction JV. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
