"I thought this was a good early season test for our squad," said Purdy coach Grant Young. "Walnut Grove is a solid Class 1 program year in, year out. Tonight, we had too many dead possessions where we turned the ball over without getting a shot off."
The Lady Tigers led 10-13 at the end of the first period and 28-27 at intermission. Walnut Grove established control of the game with a 15-5 run to open the third period and led 32-45 before two buckets by Addy Roller cut the deficit to 51-40 to begin the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers attempted to stall the ball in the fourth period but were forced to pick up the pace when Roller connected on her second consecutive trey in the period to pull Purdy within five at 48-53 with 4:27 left in the contest. The Lady Eagles would not get any closer.
Walnut Grove outrebounded Purdy 30 to 20.
"We can't afford to get outworked on the boards," said Young. "We overran several potential rebounds and that really hurt us tonight. The season is only two games in; we'll learn and get better from this experience."
Roller led all scorers with 26 points. Rachel Neill and Mattie White added 6 points each. Taylor Moller recorded 5 points. Billie House added 4 points, and Katie Hughes finished with 2 points.
Seven different Lady Tigers scored. Walnut Grove was led by Lexi Harman's 14 points.
Purdy will be in action on Thursday against Springfield Central at Aurora High School. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
