Monett qualifies cross country runners for state

Monett's Chris Renteria won the Class 3 District 6 boys crown on Saturday, holding on to beat Republic's Ryan Way, 17:10 to 17:11. Teammate Michael Morley was the only other Barry County boy to qualify for the state meet, finishing 14th in 17:56.

Both the Monett and McDonald County boys cross country teams fell short of qualifying for state on Saturday. Logan-Rogersville and Bolivar took the top two team positions at the Class 3 District 6 meet at Bolivar, scoring 53 and 65 points respectively. The Mustangs were third with 96 points, and Monett finished fourth with 98 points. Cassville scored 240 points for 10th place.

The Bolivar Lady Liberators placed seven runners in the top nine and easily won the Class 3 District 6 cross country championships. Bolivar scored 23 points, with McDonald County taking second with 92 points. Monett finished seventh with 162 points.

Webb City's Natalie Capron won the individual title, crossing the finish line in 20:34.

Monett's Madeleine Weber nailed down a state qualifier position, finishing 10th in 22:22. Deborah Kern, of Cassvillec also earned a trip to state, placing 12th in 22:26.

"I am very proud of the effort our kids gave on a tough course," said Monett coach Kelly George. "I knew it was going to be a great race, and we would have to earn the ticket to state. They have worked so hard this season and are prepared for their last race. I'm so proud of them and can't wait to see what they do at state.

"A big thanks to all of our fans for supporting us last Saturday," added George. "We had a great crowd to cheer us on and it makes an impact on these kids."

Class1, District 5

The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs raced to a district championship at Washburn on Saturday, winning the Class 1 District 5 cross country championships with a score of 24 points. The Sparta Lady Trojans took second with 31 points.

Hailey Stevens, a freshman from Chadwick, was the individual champion, posting a 20:49 on the campus of Southwest High School.

Brittany Harmon led the Wheaton attack, finishing fourth. Samantha Etzler, Chase Burns, and Breanna Brattin took fifth, eighth and 10th respectivley, and Krista Dunnegan finished 19th as Darrell Crane's girls hoisted the winning hardware.

Both Southwest entries finished in the top 15 and earned spots in the state meet. Brittany Miles placed 12th and Chelsea Leroy finished 14th for the Lady Trojans.

As expected, the Sparta Trojans repeated as district champions, scoring 28 points. Southwest's boys had a banner day, placing five runners in the top 30 while holding off Wheaton for second place, 52;73.

The Trojans were led by Cristian Sellars in third place. James Pettit and Kyle Miller placed 10th and 11th, Zach Miles was 14th, and Jake Shrum ran a monster PR to finish 29th.

Jon Sherwood led Wheaton, finishing seventh. He was followed by Tyler Pendergraft in 12th, Matt Hickman in 18th, Justin Yeary in 27th, Jeffrey Musick in 33rd, David Haston in 41st and Chase Cantwell in 42nd.

Purdy runners were headed by A.J. McCormick in 17th. Lucas Ridenour placed 23rd, Drew Williams was 30th, and Devon Keeler finished 35th.

The MSHSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City on Saturday. The race schedule is: Class 1, boys; 9 a.m.; Class 2, boys; 9:35 a.m.; Class 1, girls; 10:10 a.m.; Class 2, girls; 10:50 a.m.; Class 3, girls; 11:30 a.m.; Class 4, boys; 12:05 p.m.; Class 3, boys; 12:35 p.m.; Class 4, girls; 1:05 p.m.
