Area workshop needs more work

Thursday, October 27, 2011

The Monett Area Extended Employment (Sheltered) Workshop board met recently to adopt a budget and review its annual audit.

Director Mica Plummer said budgets for the fiscal year beginning on July 1 must be filed with the workshop division of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) by Oct. 15.

According to the audit of fiscal year 2010-11, business activity at the Workshop showed a slight increase over the previous year. Plummer said the new budget projected business would show another slight increase in the coming year as the economy improves.

The audit was conducted by Kurt Krueger with The CPA Group in Monett.

A visit was anticipated later in the month from Dan Geier, the new state representative for DESE, who planned to conduct the annual field audit.

Board members discussed preparations for seeking transportation money from the county tax boards for the developmentally disabled for the 2012 grant cycle. Plummer reported preparing three new job quotes for potential customers.

"We need work," Plummer told The Times.

Workshop employees remain capable of doing "just about anything," Plummer said. Currently, they sort and process recyclables, build wood pallettes, assemble packaging material and other tasks that supplement manufacturing in local industries.
