Sales tax generated in Monett continues to represent the lion's share of taxes collected in Barry County.
County Treasurer Lois Lowe told The Times that revenues collected from Monett businesses consistently make up 46 to 48 percent of the $1,743,000 collected by the county in 2010.
At a meeting on the proposed 3/16th-cent sales tax in Cassville, Lowe said she misspoke when she said Monett's businesses generated only 25 percent of the county's sales tax revenue. She said she had factored payments to Monett's tax increment financing (TIF) program and was not looking at the grand total in answering the question.
Over the last six months, a comparison between Monett's half-cent sales tax for capital improvements, without the Lawrence County businesses included, and Barry County's half-cent tax showed what the two taxes produced. Monett's portion of the county tax total ranged from a low of 35 percent in August to a high of 55 percent in April, for an average of 46 percent per month.
For the first nine months of 2011, Monett's sales tax represented 47 percent of Barry County's total, based on figured supplied by Monett City Administrator Dennis Pyle.
