The Monett High School speech and debate team competed at the Kickapoo varsity and Glendale novice tournaments on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15.
Advancing to semi-finals at Glendale was Taylor Renfro, dramatic interpretation.
Students advancing to finals and placing at the novice tournament were: Taylor Renfro and Tanesha Eden, fifth place, duo interpretation; Tom Younker, sixth place, US extemporaneous speaking, and fourth place, Lincoln Douglas debate; Alex Schmitt, third place, foreign extemporaneous speaking; and Tarek Masri and Tania Contreras, fourth place, public forum debate.
Advancing to semi-finals in the varsity division were: Garrett Maxey, humorous interpretation; Gabe Counts, humorous interpretation; Garrett Maxey and Emily Copening, duo interpretation; Kale Turner, oratory; Emma Verstraete, oratory and domestic extemporaneous speaking; and Bryce Isbell, domestic extemporaneous speaking.
Advancing to finals and placing at the varsity tournament were: Kole Eden and Laramie Ellis, sixth place, duo interpretation; Kale Turner and Emma Verstraete, third place, champ public forum debate; Reece Johnson and Bryce Isbell, second place, champ public forum debate; and Zeina Masri, first place, dramatic interpretation.
In a field of 27 schools, the varsity team placed fifth at Kickapoo and the novice team placed fourth at Glendale. The combined squad placed fourth overall.
