Saturday, Nov. 5 will be a day of celebration at the Monett Elementary School, beginning with an official ribbon cutting at the new school building at 2 p.m. followed by a Family Fun Fest, from 4 to 7 p.m., hosted by the elementary school's PTO.
The special event, which will provide the perfect time for local residents to view the new campus, will include a chili and hot dog supper and a long list of fun activities for the entire family.
The chili dinner, with service beginning at 4 p.m., will include chili cornbread, crackers, brownie and a drink for $5. For those who don't enjoy chili, there will the option of a hot dog, chips, brownie and a drink, also for $5.
|The festival has been planned around a carnival theme with colorful decorations, a ticket booth and a large variety of games for kids, including an air cannon game, a toilet paper toss and the popular cow train.|
"We will have tents, and the school will be decorated with bright red, yellow, white and blue colors," said Julie Southard, chairperson of the Fall Family Fest planning committee. "It will be a good night for kids and their families to come out and do something fun together."
There will also be inflatables from the YMCA, a magic show by Greg Mercer, science experiments by Heno Head and performances by the MES Cub Choir. Other planned activities include: face painting; a pie auction; a cake walk; a 50/50 drawing; a duck pond; and balloon animals. Youngsters will also have the opportunity to pose for pictures in local race cars, and there will be a family photo spot featuring a strong man and woman cutout.
In addition to the chili supper, there will be a concessions stand offering popular carnival treats like cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones.
"We're going to go all out and make it fun and enjoyable for the community. Anyone can come if they want to participate in games, food and activities."
The event will be held rain or shine. The carnival and games will take place in the new gym, and the concessions will be served in the commons area. The only outside activities are the cow train and photo opportunities with the race cars.
The Family Fun Fest is a new event for the Monett Elementary School PTO and will serve as the organization's major fundraiser of the year.
"We want this event to take the place of door to door sales for the younger kids," said Southard.
The PTO is a parent-led organization that raises money to support the school, teachers and students. Recently, the PTO purchased learning rugs for every classroom in the building. These large rugs are used by teachers for group instruction. In addition, the PTO funds all of the students' field trips and purchases supplies for the teachers' workroom. Two or three times a year, PTO members also host teacher appreciation events.
All Family Fun Fest activities will take place at the new Monett Elementary School campus located at 601 Learning Lane off of County Street. The event is open to students, parents and community members.
"All proceeds go back directly to the school," said Southard.
