Mary Helen Courdin, age 81, of Monett, MO, passed away on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, while at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, MO, following a sudden illness.

Mary was born on April 5, 1930, in Monett, MO, the twin daughter of the late Charles L. Matthews and Lena M. (Bryant) Matthews. Mary graduated from Monett High School with the Class of 1948. She then attended Monett Jr. College and SMS, pursuing a degree in elementary education. Mary taught third and fourth grades at Marshall Hill Elementary and also in Wentworth in the early 1950s. She later worked as a CNA for Lacoba Nursing Home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Monett, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer in the nursery.

Mary Helen Matthews and Gene Austin Courdin were united in marriage on June 4, 1953, in Monett. They were blessed with over 52 years together. To this union five children were born. Gene preceded her in death on July 6, 2005. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Charles L. Matthews.

Mary is survived by two sons: Russell Courdin, of Monett, and David Courdin and wife, Angela, of Purdy, MO; three daughters: Deborah Gemmecke, of Wheaton, MO; Mary Lynn Locke and husband, Leldon, of Sherman, Texas; and Martha Whitson and husband, Brian, of Branson, MO; her twin sister: Sue Reed, of Springfield, MO; 10 grandchildren: Janet McNeill and husband, Brooks; Jennifer Wilson and husband, Michael; Jonathan Gemmecke; Joseph Gemmecke and wife, Veronica; Caleb Mowrey and wife, Shelly; Stephen Mowrey; Alexis Courdin; Rachel Postlewait and husband, Heath; Seth Whitson and Leo Whitson; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, twin sister and friend to all those that knew her.

Funeral services for Mrs. Courdin will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Monett. Dr. Bill Cox will officiate. Interment will be in the Waldensian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
