"I thought we played an excellent game tonight, and I am very proud of our boys," said Monett head coach Dan Janssen. "We possessed and moved the ball well today and were able to dictate a lot of the play. We pressured the ball when they had possession and made them work for every inch. The kids love to play against Cassville, and I was thrilled that they went out and earned themselves a win."
The Wildcats and Cubs each scored via a penalty kick in the first half. Cassville's was by Austin Deffenbaugh in the 29th minute, and Monett's equalizer came from Eddie Aceves in the 36th minute.
Tied 1-1 at the start of the second half, Monett stepped up the intensity.
In the 48th minute, Jario Rueda centered a pass in front of the Cassville net, and Travis Thompson deflected it into the goal to give the Cubs their first lead.
Jorge Aceves increased the advantage in the 64th minute with a shot from 30 yards out that trickled past a diving goalie.
Cassville made things interesting in the game's final 10 minutes.
Twice the Wildcats had break-away scoring chances and twice Monett's Goalie Freddie Lopez made outstanding saves to extinguish the scoring threat.
"The boys didn't get down on themselves after falling in a 0-1 hole even though we had more shots and better chances," said Janssen. "We kept our heads in the game, played hard and were able to tie the score. We were able to establish control and pressure, and Travis was able to put in a tough shot from a good center by Jairo. Jorge was able to seal the win with a heads-up play on defense, stepping up, collecting the ball and putting a beautiful shot in the lower right corner."
Monett won the junior varsity contest 5-0.
Scoring goals for the Cubs were: George Fulton (2), Eddie Aceves and Jairo Rueda (2).
Monett will be in action on Thursday at Marshfield. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
