An Oregon County man is dead following a two-vehicle wreck on Saturday on Interstate 44 one quarter mile east of Mt. Vernon.
According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at 7:02 p.m. when the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet pickup trick, Dallas A. Shearer, 16, of Ash Grove, merged onto the eastbound lane of I-44 and then changed lanes and attempted to overtake another driver.
A 2006 Ford pickup truck, driven by Jacob Bearden, 21, of Myrtle, was in the left lane and was struck by the Shearer vehicle. Bearden's vehicle then traveled into the median and returned to the pavement before striking the southern bridge rail and vaulting the vehicle off the bridge.
Bearden was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin.
This is Troop D's 78th fatality for the year.
* A Purdy man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle wreck Saturday on Highway 37 one mile south of Washburn. The crash occurred at 12:55 p.m. when the driver of a 2005 Triumph motorcycle, Kenneth N. Key, 60, of Purdy, struck the back of a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle, ridden by Randy A. Newman, 54, of Monett. Key was taken to Cox Hospital South in Springfield.
* A Freistatt woman was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Sunday. The crash occurred at 8:30 p.m. on Farm Road 2212 one mile west of Highway P when the driver of a 2000 Ford F-150, Maxine K. Hudson, 63, of Freistatt, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert and overturned. Hudson was taken by ambulance to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin with moderate injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.
