The Highway 60 bridge over Spring River at Verona will be closed beginning on Monday, Sept. 19. The bridge is due to undergo major renovations and installation of a new deck. Work is due to continue until the week of Nov. 14 and periodically require closing of Farm Road 1150 below the bridge. During the highway closure, all traffic will be diverted onto Business Highway 60 through Verona. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is urging motorists to plan for trips to take longer due to the detour. Electronic message boards notifying motorists of the work have been in place since Sept. 6. Work on the bridge is part of MoDOT's Safe and Sound bridge improvement program. The Spring River bridge was built in 1961 and extends for 302 feet. According to a MoDOT statement, the bridge deck has undergone frequent repairs and is due for replacement. The prime contractor on the project is Robertson Contractors Inc., of Poplar Bluff, the low bidder at $431,919. [Times Photo by Lisa Craft]
