Lyla Rauch Gates, age 97, of Aurora, passed away at 2:35 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, in her home. She was born to Orion Wilson and Nellie Juno (Bailey) Bass in Springdale, Ark. on April 29, 1914. She attended schools in Monett, graduating with the class of 1932. She has been a resident of Aurora since 1940.

Lyla married James P. Rauch on July 31, 1937, and worked with him in their printing and office supply business until retiring in 1975. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1980.

Lyla then married Eugene Gates on Feb. 3, 1985 and moved to Purdy for 13 years. Eugene passed away on December 29, 1997. Lyla moved back to her home in Aurora in February of 1998.

Lyla was a member of the Christian Science Church and attended the United Methodist Church in Aurora. She was the past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Aurora.

Those surviving her include two sons: Tom Rauch, of Aurora; and James O. Rauch, of Fairfax, Va.; one daughter: Phyllis Coonrod, of Belton, Mo.; seven grandchildren: Tammi Mattox and Renee Neill, of Aurora; Leslie Piar, of Springfield; Neil Coonrod, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Linda Hook, of Raymore, Mo.; John Coonrod, of Chandler, Ariz.; and Sandy Traver, of Perrysburg, Ohio. Lyla was also blessed with 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Her parents and one brother, Max Bass, also preceded her in death.

A graveside service, under the direction of the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home, will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at the Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Aurora or the St. John's Hospice of Aurora in care of the funeral home.
