The Monett Cubs soccer team scored four goals in each half to pull away from Aurora 8-1 in Thursday night action.

"We wanted to attack early and get some momentum," said Monett Head Coach Dan Janssen. "We played with a sence of urgency tonight, and I was very pleased with the teamwork and effort my team put forth."

Monett scored its first goal just two minutes into the contest when Tyler Webb scored off an Eddie Aceves pass.

Webb picked up an assist on Monett's second goal in the 12th minute, when he set up teammate Francisco Morales for the score.

Will Snider accounted for the Cubs' next two goals.

In the 22nd minute, Travis Thompson broke free and passed to the wing for Snider's first goal. Five minutes later Webb lofted a corner kick across the box, and Snider's header found the back of the net to put Monett up 4-0.

"Our team had great field awareness," said Jannsen. "We were in the right spot at the right time and just kept finding the back of the net. We need to continue to build off the momentum from this game and carry it through the remainder of our season."

In the second half, the Cubs' varsity underclassmen got into the action.

Senior Travis Thompson scored an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute.

Freshman Jairo Rueda scored in the 57th minute off a nice assist from Aceves. Rueda then scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute.

Misael Cordero, also a freshman, completed Monett's scoring in the 74th minute with Nick Forbis getting the assist.

"It was great to see our freshmen step up and score," said Janssen. "We knew coming in that they had some talent. Tonight hopefully gave them that shot of confidence they need to succeed at the varsity level."

Monett outshot Aurora 32-7.

"I do think the score was a little deceptive," added Janssen. "Aurora could have easily scored three or four goals. This game was very important to us. We played this team during the summer, and they played us real close. We just need to continue to build on this foundation."

Monett travels to Cassville on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m.
