Firefighter arrested for arson

Thursday, September 1, 2011

A Halltown firefighter and two other men have been charged with arson in connection with a series of fires in Halltown.

Cody Gossett, 20, of Halltown, was arrested yesterday and charged with second degree arson. He is a member of the Halltown Volunteer Fire Department.

Matthew A. Smith, 23, and Christopher D. Smith, 21, both of Mt. Vernon, were also arrested and charged with second degree arson in connection with the series of fires.

"These arrests were made after investigations into several suspicious fires, including two abandoned residences, hay bale fires and several other suspicious fires in the area," said Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay. "More charges are pending regarding the additional fires. We may also charge additional suspects in these cases."

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department has requested the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office in the continuing investigations of this string of arson fires.
