The Monett Lady Cubs volleyball team finished last season 16-18-1 and look to build off that momentum this season.

First-year coach Trish Henry takes over a squad that has a solid mix of players. Henry will be assisted by Magan McPheeters.

"I think that our season will go with how we work," said Henry. "We are learning new systems and ways of doing even the most fundamental of skills and that takes time and effort and commitment.

"We will work hard and be determined," Henry continued." At the end of the day, we should be able to put ourselves in a good position in both the conference and the district competitions, but there will be bumps along the way. How hard nosed we will be for the duration of our season will ultimately determine our success."

Henry will have a well stocked group of returning lettermen at her disposal. Returning for the Lady Cubs are: Seniors Madison Schmidt, who was a Big 8 Conference honorable mention; Mackenzie Lay and Elise Meyer who was named to the Big 8 second team. One key loss for Monett is Hunter Glouse, who is out for the season with an ACL injury. As a junior, Glouse was named to the Big 8 first team, as well as All District and All-State teams.

Top prospects for Monett are: Jessica Schmidt, senior; Jerica Wiseman, senior; Morgan Spilman, junior; Elizabeth Arnold, sophomore; and Maddy Glouse, freshman.

"Schmidt and Lay showed excellent commitment to the program in the off-season," said Henry. "Each attended nearly every camp and event the team attended."

Monett opened the season on Tuesday at Carthage.

The home opener for the Lady Cubs is Thursday at 6 p.m. against Springfield Central.
