The Dan Janssen coaching era at Monett High School got off to a great start as the Monett Cubs soccer team defeated Republic 4-1 to begin the 2011 season.

Monett got on the board in the 12th minute when junior Julio Velazquez scored unassisted on a corner kick. Eight minutes later senior Travis Thompson scored via penalty kick. Thompson picked up his second goal in the 35th minute off a Francisco Morales assist.

"I thought that our team played well from top to bottom," said Janssen. "Our defense was solid and prevented a lot of shots, our midfielders passed the ball well and were able to help move the ball down the field, and our forwards looked great and created a lot of problems for the other team. Our subs were able to come in, and they played hard and shared some significant playing time, which will only help our team improve."

Monett tallied one more goal in the 54th minute when sophomore Eddie Aceves scored off a nice pass from teammate Will Snider.

The Cubs had 19 shots on goal on the evening.

Monett goalie Freddy Lopez added 14 saves on 15 shot attempts.

"I am very proud of the way our kids played as they did a great job of listening to Coach Villa and me and trying to play a style that is different from what they are used to," said Janssen. "This win is one they should be proud of. Republic is a solid team, and this win serves as a good building block for what we are wanting to do with this program."

The soccer Cubs will be in action on Thursday at Aurora. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
