Irene aftermath

Hurricane Irene didn't just impact the people of the East Coast, but some local residents as well. Frank and Marcia Compton, who, along with their daughter Neely Bryant, own a vacation home in Lynbonville, Vt., found their A-frame structure "completely totaled" by the storm waters that poured from the mountains into the Champlain Valley. The home, located near a brook that is usually no more than eight-feet across, was swallowed from storm run-off that swelled the creek and changed the course of the creek bed. Compton's daughter, Keri Compton, of Springfield, was vacationing at the home when the storm hit and evacuated the residence when the water started rising rapidly. "It was a beautiful house," Compton said. "We would stay there and leave the door open to hear the babbling of the brook." Compton and his wife, who live in Monett, will travel to Vermont within the next few days to evaluate the damage and contact their insurance carrier.
