In recent history, Monett has developed a proud tradition of churning out quality long distance runners.
Last season, the Cubs finished second in the conference and third at districts. The Lady Cubs were third in the conference and sixth at districts.
The cross country team has a nice mix of veteran runners and eager to learn youth this season.
Returning from last years team: Chris Renteria, a senior. Renteria was a All-Conference first team selection and a state qualifier. Also back is senior Isaac Webber, an All-Conference first team selection.
Also running for the Cubs are: juniors Michael Morely and John Schleim; sophomores: Jonah Ragsdale and Aaron Morely; freshman: Erwin Perez and Dalton Paynter.
"The team has ran well all summer and continues to improve on a weekly basis," said Kelly George, first year Monett coach. "We are very excited about this season."
Sophie Fulton and Ashley Schmidley, seniors, will help anchor the Lady Cubs.
Also returning for Monett are: junior Brittany Schultz; sohomores Madeline Webber and Lupe Renteria. Weber was a first team All-Conference and state qualifier last season.
"We have a good base to build on and a strong group of runners," said George. "We will be counting on leadership from our seniors. As the season progresses, we need our third, fourth and fifth place runners to improve."
Monett will contend for both Big 8 Conference and district titles.
East Newton will be the team to watch in the conference and McDonald County at districts.
"We have an outstanding group of men and women running for our cross country program this year," said George. "They have worked extremely hard over the summer to compete at a high level. It should be fun."
Monett will begin the cross country running season on Sept. 3 at Nixa.
