The Lady Cubs' roster featured four freshman in the starting line up and everyone produced in their first varsity game. The fab four, who include Allie Krueger, Abby Krueger, Brooke Burnside and Brooke Madison, were a combined six for eight at the plate with four walks, a double and six RBIs.
"Getting our girls off on a positive note was huge for us," said Monett Head Coach Ty Goetz. "We need those underclassmen to mature and play well for us to be successful this season. We need to use this game as a foundation to build on."
"It feels good to come out and get the win," said Ratliff. "I was a little nervous and had to keep telling myself to keep going. We were able to score some runs and that helped me relax."
Monett exploded for four runs in the second and third innings and tacked on five more in the fourth.
Andrea Soriano went two for thtee with a pair of singles for the Lady Cubs.
"Winners win," said Soriano. "We needed to get the first victory to start off the season on the right foot. I get nervous before every game, and it's very important that I stay focus on helping the team."
With so much emphasis put on defense during the summer. Goetz was happy with the offensive outburst.
|"Our timing was off during the first three innings." said Goetz. "Even though we scored eight runs during that period, we didn't hit the ball real hard. By the time we reached our last at bat, I thought all of our hitter were hitting the ball harder. It is all a process, and we will only get better with time."|
Monett plays in the Ash Grove Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Cubs are scheduled to play El Dorado Springs at 10:30 a.m.
